Botulinum therapy (Botox / Xeomin)

An injectable medicine based on purified and weakened botulinum neurotoxin type A. Effective remedy for combating wrinkles, age-related skin changes and hyperhidrosis (increased sweating). The action of botulinum toxin temporarily blocks the passage of nerve impulses. As a result, the muscle fibers stop contracting, and the muscles relax. This leads to smoothing of wrinkles and lifting of the skin.

The effect is observed locally—in the treatment area. During the period of action of the medicine, the patient gets out of the habit of straining those muscle groups, the increased tone of which is what causes formation of wrinkles and folds—the forehead area, the area around the eyes and lips.This helps prevent the appearance of new wrinkles. At the same time, natural facial expressions are preserved.

In the treatment of excessive sweating, the active substance of the medicine partially or completely blocks the activity of the sweat glands.

After 4-6 months, the effect of the medicine fades away.

The use of these medicines is approved by such reputable organizations as The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control (NIBSC). These are the highest regulatory bodies that impose the strictest requirements regarding the quality of medicines and food.

Procedure technique

The procedure is carried out once, the medicine can be re-injected in 4-6 months. The duration of the session is 15-25 minutes, depending on the number of problem areas.

The session begins with a specialist consult, at which the doctor assesses the severity of esthetic problems and determines how much medicine to administer. Medicine consumption depends on the zone of exposure:

• forehead and superciliary area: 4-15 units;
• skin around the eyes, wrinkles between the eyebrows: 8-25 units;
• lifting of the corners of the mouth: 4-6 units.

Before the administration of the medicine, the patient's skin is treated with a disinfectant. The medicine is inserted with a series of injections using the thinnest needles with a diameter of 0.3 mm at predetermined points.

The effect of the medicine develops gradually, reaching its maximum after 2 weeks. Botox blocks the expression muscles that cause wrinkles. The skin in the correction zone is smoothed out; facial contours are restored; fine wrinkles disappear, deep ones become less noticeable.

In the treatment of hyperhidrosis, before starting the procedure, an iodine-starch test (Minor's test) is performed, which allows to accurately identify the treatment area. The medicine is injected subcutaneously to a depth of about 3 mm. The injection technique is similar to the procedure for eliminating wrinkles. The active substance of the medicine blocks the activity of the sweat glands, which leads to a significant reduction in perspiration.

For successful treatment of hyperhidrosis in women, on average, 80-100 units of the medicine are sufficient for each treated area; for men, this amount increases by 30-50%.

The session ends with antiseptic skin treatment.

The procedure does not cause excessive pain. In some cases, local anesthesia is used.
